COVID impact on Elections Statewide

The downward spiral started in early March when my first important event that my regional SGA that I am apart of (CRASC), had been planning for over 5 months had gotten canceled due to COVID-19. Then MASC ( Maryland Association of Student Councils) Convention got canceled which was an event student leaders across the state had been looking forward to since the beginning of the School Year.

Shortly after Gov. Larry Hogan had shutdown the state which meant NO SCHOOL. No in person events with more then 10 people could occur much less a General Assembly with more then 100 Students, which most regional SGA elections have. Student Leaders around the state rallied even with the current conditions.

MASC Elections took place on April 1st electing President Elect Carmelli Leal from Baltimore County, Vice President Elect Gabe Tuckhorn from Montgomery County, 2nd Vice President Elect Cooper Delauter from Fredrick County, and Treasurer Elect Alvaro Ceron-Ruiz from Prince Georges County. This election set a standard for other regional SGAS around Maryland.

"We Have to adapt" says an sga student from Sollers Point High School in Dundalk.

Since then many SGAS around Maryland have held SMOB and officers elections online.

Some SGAs are waiting until next year for Officer Elections and Some have already elected their officers. SMOB elections are almost a necessity to happen online so that Gov. Larry Hogan can confirm their appointment this summer.

Questions do linger around, that are still unknown...

Is this the new normal ?
Are virtual elections more efficient ?
Will elections ever be the same?

Hopefully these answers can be answered in the coming weeks as lock-down restrictions are easing up around the country.
